Sustainability

The Backcountry Hut Company was born from a deep appreciation of the outdoors and a desire to put down roots in the places we seek adventure. Loving the outdoors means treading lightly in the environment, and preserving our natural and wild spaces for future generations.

We are very conscious of the environmental impact that building can have. As stewards of the planet, we thoughtfully consider each element of our brand and product to ensure a light footprint. We operate with a zero-waste philosophy in the design and implementation of our systems, select environmentally-conscious building materials, plan efficient uses of space and energy, and deliver a product that makes a minimal impact on the landscape.

Every BHC System is fabricated using FSC-certified Canadian wood and responsibly-sourced and produced materials that can be fully recycled - a choice that stems from our commitment to the natural environment and the health of our forests. We value the protection and preservation of local old growth and second growth forests, and green spaces in urban and recreational landscapes.

Our core considerations:

  • We seek products that can be RECYCLED at the end of their life. Our target is a shell System that is 100% recyclable.

  • We work with LOCALLY-SOURCED products, makers, and manufacturing partners.

  • We select products that are SUSTAINABLY PRODUCED.

  • We have adopted a ZERO WASTE philosophy in our production and construction practices.

  • We utilize ENERGY EFFICIENT materials that consider the health of people and the planet.

150 Trees Initiative

BHC has an ongoing commitment to the health and resilience of our forests. That’s why we partner with Forests Canada (FC) to plant 150 trees for every System 01 and 02 cabin purchased.

FC is a non-profit charity dedicated to restoring and growing Canada’s forests to ensure thriving, biodiverse ecosystems today and for future generations. Over the past 75 years, FC has supported the planting of nearly 47 million trees, restoring over 900,000 hectares of connected forest landscapes and improving biodiversity along more than 200 kilometers of waterways.

Through partnerships with municipalities, First Nations, conservation organizations, and corporate sponsors, FC works to minimize the effects of climate change by leading large-scale, sustainable tree planting projects. Their efforts support local jobs and communities, steward the land through scientific data-driven planning, and foster meaningful connections with Indigenous communities.

By focusing on seed collection, reforestation, and education, FC ensures that planting the right tree in the right place contributes to long-term environmental and community benefits. Learn more and find opportunities to support the forests of the future.
