Sauna Culture
How to Sauna Like a Finn
Today, we sat down with Martin Mansikka, our System S manufacturing partner, to dive into the world of sauna culture. Growing up in a family of Finnish heritage, Martin developed an early appreciation for the significance of saunas within Nordic life.
“In Finland, sauna culture runs deep—it’s woven into daily life. With 3 million plus saunas for a population of just 5.5 million, nearly every household has access to one. Saunas are more than just a place to relax—they're a cornerstone of Finnish culture and well-being.” — Martin Mansikka
Ready to Sauna Like a True Finn? Here Are Some Must-Know Tips from Martin:
Steam Patterns:
One of the most distinctive aspects of a sauna is löyly—the Finnish word for steam. But löyly is more than just steam; it’s the unique atmosphere each sauna creates. No two saunas have the same löyly. Martin explains, for example, “my small island cabin sauna gives a quick, intense heat, while my neighbour’s larger sauna offers a slower, longer-lasting warmth. Both provide distinct steam patterns but equally enjoyable experiences.”
Sauna Cycling:
Beyond relaxation, saunas offer significant health benefits. Studies show that regular sauna use can reduce the risk of degenerative diseases and improve overall well-being. The therapeutic effects really kick in when the sauna reaches temperatures of 80°C or higher. A full cycle includes heat, followed by a cold plunge, and concludes with a period of relaxation as your body prepares for another round in the sauna. Finns often engage in multiple rounds, which is believed to boost circulation, reduce inflammation, enhance recovery and a sense of overall peace.
Community:
Sauna culture is also deeply social. It’s common to visit a friend’s sauna or enjoy a communal one together. In cities like Helsinki, communal saunas are an integral part of the urban lifestyle, often located in condo buildings or throughout the city, and they have become a regular routine for many. One example is the famous Löyly at the Helsinki Harbour front.
Accessories:
"Looking to elevate your sauna experience? 'Traditional accessories like sauna hats help you stay in the heat longer by protecting your head. And when you're done, there's nothing better than cooling off with Finland's famous gin and grapefruit long drink,' says Martin."
